Escape To The Mexican Pipeline To Enjoy The Surfing And Live Nightlife
If you are lucky enough to stay in Huatulco for more than a week you may find yourself wanting to explore destinations requiring a little more of a drive. Puerto Escondido is a gorgeous beach town located about 1hr 45 mins direct from Huatulco. This town is a getaway even for the locals, with its stunning panoramic beach views and vast selection of entertainment.
Puerto Escondido Surfing
What Puerto Escondido is undoubtedly known for is its incredible surf break. Known as the Mexican Pipeline this surf town offers massive waves perfect for veteran surfers. In fact Zicatela beach has become famous for hosting surf competitions every season. Hosting such events in the past as the X games and the Mexpipe Challange, this beach has become a world renowned haven for those wanting to perfect the sport.
But don’t worry, plenty of the beaches offer much smaller waves ideal for your first attempt on a board. If you find yourself in need of a little extra assistance, you won’t have to look far to book a surf lesson to help you catch your first wave.
Puerto Escondido provides a nice change of scenery from Huatulco with its live nightlife and many attractions. This town is especially bustling during surf season which occurs between early May and late October. If you have a love of seafood you will be delighted with the mass amounts of seafood cuisine representative of the area. However in recent years there has been a noticeable increase in Italian style restaurants, so if seafood is not your thing, no need to worry.
Local Activities
Apart from surfing, there are several other activities available to try in the area. For instance paddle boarding. Standing on a board, typically made of fiberglass, you maneuver yourself around using a long paddle. Sounds easy enough right? Wrong, this activity requires using almost every muscle on your body, making it an incredible work out. Paddle boarding will take the use of all of your stabilizing muscles just to remain standing while coasting on the water.
Other activities include, but are not limited to; relaxing on the beach, mingling with the locals, and even some bird watching if you’re interested. If you’re really luck you may even get to watch the newly hatched sea turtles make their way into the ocean, an incredible and rare nature phenomenon.
Transportation and Prices
This all sounds great, but how do you get there? Huatulco offers a multitude of options when it come to touring the area. The most common and economical being the bus. Huatulco’s bus station provides two major bus lines that take you into the heart of Puerto Escondido.
The first being ‘OCC’, this first class bus line will cost you $92 pesos each way per person (about $184 pesos round trip). It has a total of 9 departure times to Puerto Escondido throughout the day. The second bus line called ‘SUR’, would be considered “coach”. This option will run you about $40 pesos per person for a one way ticket ($80 pesos round trip). With a total of 12 departure times into Puerto Escondido, this option offers you a little more flexibility than the ‘OCC’ bus line. Both bus lines are comparable to what you’d expect from a larger North American bus line, so no surprises here.
However, if you are not comfortable taking the bus, you always have the option of hiring a driver for the day. Not surprisingly this will cost you a little more, for a day trip to Puerto Escondido you can expect to pay around $200-300 dollars, NOT pesos. Personally the cheap price and multiple departure times of both bus lines offer more than enough flexibility.
This bustling surf town is the perfect option for a day trip, offering a vast selection of activities and entertainment . So on your extended stay in Huatulco, be sure to check out the gorgeous Puerto Escondido
