A great tour for groups of all ages…this tour really impressed us and offered a fun and unique experience. Whether you prefer to man your own ATV or double with another driver, this tour will take you from the city to the jungle to the shores of a beachfront tropical paradise.

Our tour began with a brief but thorough safety session at the roadside meeting spot. The tour guides seemed very experienced and knowledgeable about both the ATV vehicles and the Huatulco region. After a quick practice run, with helmets secured, we sped off on a dusty trail into the depths of the jungle.

Huatulco Jungle ShrineOur first stop was at a traditional spiritual pagan alter that had been there since the 1500′s. It’s along this jungle path that Oaxacans still come to seek a connection with the gods, asking for guidance and protection. The alter was adorned with dozens of gifts left for the gods by Oaxacans who had come seeking their own spiritual enlightenment.

After taking a few moments there, we continued along the path getting to enjoy the tour at our own pace. Some of the tour participants increased their speed to bounce and cruise through the jungle path at higher speeds, while others drove at a slower pace that was better suited for their comfort levels. One guide lead the group while the other cruised behind the pack to ensure everyone stayed on track.

Bird Watching in Huatulco MexicoThe path twisted and turned, sometimes dividing in two, allowing for short races or a ‘fast lane’ for the group’s dare devils. Needless to say, everyone had a smile on their face and were enjoying the joy ride!

As we drove the jungle path, we saw hundreds of birds and wildlife and, of course, many iguanas perched high up in the trees. After about 20 minutes of riding, we came to a small old Oaxacan settlement in the jungle likely having belonged to a small family, where they may have lived decades ago. The guide was able to walk the group around, showcasing the makeshift clay-construction stoves where locals would cook up that day’s catch. Impressively, it still stood almost fully intact.

After everyone was dusty and ready for a break from the jungle path, we rode out into the most breathtaking beachfront paradise any of us had ever seen. With nothing but white sand and crystal aquamarine waters – not a single manmade structure in sight, the beach was all ours to enjoy. We all took our shoes off and ran across the hot sand to reach the water where we enjoyed a nice swim to cool down. As a point of interest, this is the beach where they filmed the Mexican movie Y Tu Mama Tambien, which was nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe.

The guides allowed all of us to take our time at the beach to cool down and appreciate the unspoiled paradise that is such rarity in this day in age. When we all ready, we got back on our vehicles and continued to cruise on.

The next stop was Maguey Bay…a great spot to enjoy a bite to eat and a cold cerveza before cruising on to the end of the tour. This bay has a number of palapa style restaurants, snorkelling rentals and beachfront vendors. The group enjoyed a nice lunch together while we listened to our guide’s stories about the local folklore.

While we were sitting on the beachfront, a local came up out of the water with snorkel gear in-tow and approached us with a tray of freshly caught clams and oysters. For a mere $10 for the lot, the snorkeller shucked the shells open for us all and sliced some lemons to squirt on this freshly caught delicacy. Never before had any of us tasted such fresh shellfish…it was incredible!

After we finished up at Maguey Bay, we got back on our ATVs and cruised back to the starting point.

This is a great tour and is one that we highly recommend for your time in the area! It gives you a taste of Huatulco’s natural wonders from jungle to sea and reminds you of why this is such a wonderfully unique spot to visit.
